- According to an Animation Guild interview with Tom Sito, the film was originally pitched to be a Broadway production, but when it was decided to do an animated film instead Abe Levitow was the original director picked. Richard Williams was supposed to simply produced the film along side Shamus Culhane. Unfortunately, Levitow passed away in 1975 at the young age of 52, so Richard Williams had to take the reins and direct the film. Sito mentions that Levitow's daughter Judy Levitow did assistant animation work on the film.
