Looney Tunes cowboy song
« on: August 31, 2014, 09:27:15 am »
Can anyone please help me? I'm looking for the name of the music that often plays in WB cartoons when there's a cowboy scene. It's the one Daffy sings in YANKEE DOODLE DAFFY when he rides around singing "I'm a cowboy, yes sir I am! Yes sir I am a cowboy, yes sir I am!". Thanks!

I found out the answer to my own question, but thought I'd post here in case anyone else is interested. The song is 'Cheyenne' (or Shy Ann) and it's much older than I thought, being from 1906. I was hoping it might be a song from the score of a 1930s Western and although that's not where the song originates, according to Wikipedia, "the song became a staple of the underscore of western films, to the point of being stereotyped".

So far the only recordings of it I've found are over 100 years old, but I'm hoping to find a version that sounds more typically Western or cowboyish, if anyone can help.

Where did you find the recordings? All I can find is a 50s/60s version.

Here's the 1906 version. The part that Daffy references is at about the one minute mark:

It was also heard over the titles to Hare Trigger, Wild and Woolly Hare and Horse Hare.

Captchuck provided the link to one version I found, below is a link to a 1907 version sung by Ada Jones (songs kicks in after a minute and a half).

Takeshi55, please can you provide a link to the 50's/60's version you found?

No worries, thanks for looking. I'm putting together a compilation of Western style music and songs and wanted to use this jolly tune. After hearing it in so many Looney Tunes cartoons, I hoped it might be an old standard and was hoping to find a recording with a real vintage feel, perhaps performed by someone like Roy Rogers or Bob Wills. Outside of snippets in Carl Stalling scores and those early Billy Murray and Ada Jones recordings (who just don't have that Western feel), I can't find it used anywhere. Never mind!
