Cartoon Discussion of the Week - 5/19/13 - Indian Corn
« on: May 19, 2013, 12:17:05 am »
Release Date: 1972
Studio: Walter Lantz/Universal
Cartoon Series: Woody Woodpecker

This was an alright short. Some of the gags in it fell short and didn't really amuse me that much. It really didn't seem like it was meant for a theatrical release; it felt more for television. I'll cut it some slack since it was one of the last and it's from the 70's. The plot with Buzz Buzzard and the Indian kid teaming up was kinda cool. Most of the gags are just old reused gags from other cartoons series like Road Runner.  I recognized the Indian kid's voice as the same person who voiced Auggie Doggie back in the early 60's for Hanna-Barbera. Overall, it was an alright short for what it was. And note, the short could offend, though it honestly doesn't have any stereotypes in it unlike other shorts and if there's any, it's a heck of a lot tamer than other shorts like this.

Why Lantz thought it was a good idea to keep Paul J. Smith, who had very poor eyesight by then, as sole director of the studio I'll never understand.  The way they introduce Buzz in this cartoon was not well planned out.  Also, why isn't Daws Butler credited in this cartoon?

Don't forget that Buzz Buzzard was voiced by Dallas McKennon (Cincinattus from Daniel Boone [Fespar Productions/Arcola Productions/20th Century Fox, 1964-70]).
