TTTP In Exile / Re: Do you still watch classic cartoons on video tape ?
« on: November 07, 2011, 04:30:04 pm »
I dub VHS tapes onto DVD's.  They're mostly recorded as stuff from the major studios are copyrighted and I cannot dub, but with Goodtimes Video and Kid Video and those kinds of companies I can dub.  But to answer your question, yes I do still watch my old PD tapes; they're just on a DVD now.

Let me go a little off topic and say that I think DVD's were made so that if you want to watch something over and over again, you can with no problem.  You can do that with VHS, but what happens if you do that?  It wears out.  While not a classic cartoon, I was into The Mighty B! and I always enjoyed the song at the end, Running with the Rainbow Unicorn.  My VHS copy from Nick (because I played that scene so much) got to the point where the sound faded in and out.  When I got the DVD, We Got the Beat, it not only included that episode, as a bonus feature it has a sing a long of that song, so instead of rewinding it all over again, you can just press play on it over again or hit repeat title.

They should have had DVD's and dubbing in the 90s, but better now than never.

TTTP In Exile / Re: Is the new Tom & Jerry Golden Collection worth buying?
« on: November 07, 2011, 12:01:01 pm »
It is absolutely worth owning.  Hardly any signs of dirt or scratches, and some of the colors started to show up better than on TV and the Spotlight collections.  I hope the series continues

I saw this set at Walmart on its release date, but I decided to pass on buying the set until I knew whether "Porky's Duck Hunt" was restored. I read the review posted over at Toonzone, and saw a screen cap from the cartoon and got my answer. The restoration for this cartoon does look great. A few minor things I did notice. The first few seconds of the opening music is cut off. There is also one brief scene while Porky is hiding behind some tall grass that does look really blurry. Other than that, a perfect restoration and I thought to be worth the purchase for this short alone.

As for not being able to restore is a few years ago, I would guess that WHV had built up enough of a budget to finally restore this cartoon. After all, they haven't exactly kept good with restoring 60 shorts a year since the Golden Collections were discontinued. Perhaps the cost to restore "Porky's Duck Hunt" really was higher than it was for most other shorts that have been restored. Then again, we may never know.

Just by hearing those minor imperfections, you can see why WHV held off restoring this one.  Still, I'm glad they went in and restored and remastered this cartoon as it is more so a way of preserving rather than just to have it in better quality for DVD and especially blu-ray.  And it surprises me that they are restoring black and white material again now too.

As many of you know, The Essential Daffy Duck came out yesterday.  I was wondering if anyone has a copy and would like to tell us what it is like.  For example, how is the quality on Porky's Duck Hunt and some other interesting details.

When will this feature more than the sneak peak?  Looking good by the way.
