: Pre-1989 Animated Disney Films Re-Releases of the 80's and 90's
: ForumDocXV September 29, 2013, 08:16:41 PM
Disney has made alot of timeless animation films and several underrated ones too, I want to share to you their re-releases from the 80's and 90's. The main reason I'm doing this is because since this is interesting to talk about. During the 80's and 90's, Disney kept continuing to re-release their classic animated films from the canon series in the big screen and were never released onto home video until then. This will only be about the pre-1989 Animated Disney Films (from Snow White to Oliver and Company) before the Disney Renaissance era came in starting with The Little Mermaid in 1989.

1980's
1980

1981 - The Fox and the Hound

1982

1983

1984

1985 - The Black Cauldron

1986 - The Great Mouse Detective

1987

1988 - Oliver & Company

1989 - The Little Mermaid

1990's
1990 - The Rescuers Down Under

1991 - Beauty and the Beast

1992 - Aladdin

1993

1994 - The Lion King

1995 - Pocahontas

1996 - The Hunchback of Notre Dame

The reason why Disney kept re-releasing their classic films in theaters for 2 decades is because they were the foundation upon which the Disney company was built. Every time they were re-released to theaters (on a roughly seven-year cycle), they earned money like new releases and it was felt that allowing them on video or on television could end their lives as theatrical releases. But of course the only 2 exception are both Dumbo and Alice in Wonderland due to that they were shown on TV very early in the 50's on the Disneyland show in shortened edited versions before shown completely years later. The other 3 exceptions are The Three Caballeros, Fun and Fancy Free, and The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh.

Here's a list of Disney films that first time came out on home video:
1980's

1990's

2000's

I believe Song of the South was re-released in 1986, unless you are only counting fully-animated Disney features.

Sleeping Beauty" was rereleased on home video in 1997 on vhs and laserdisc with a 16 min documentary.  Also the remastered widescreen (Technorama 70) version has it's own home video release as well.  Interesting fact: The widescreen  (Technorama 70) Version of "Sleeping Beauty" has not been on video format since 1986 utill 1997  hope that helps  :)

Not counting the half live-action animated Disney films, only full animated Disney films from the canon from 1937 to 1988.

I'm not including their home video re-releases since there are too many to put in this topic. But I don't mind you guys putting in replies of their home video re-releases.
