Inside Jokes
- According to co-director Byron Howard, the character Emmitt Otterton is named after Emmet Otter from the Jim Henson Christmas special "Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas".
- The character Duke Weaselton is named after the Frozen character the Duke of Weselton (both voiced by Alan Tudyk). In addition, Judy mispronounces Duke's last name as "Weselton".
- The florist shop where Emmitt Otterton works is named Flora and Fauna, named after two of the three fairy godmothers in Sleeping Beauty.
Trivia
- The film was originally going to revolve around Nick Wilde, but test audiences said that they had a hard time connecting with him emotionally and instead found themselves drawn to Judy Hopps. It was in November 2014 when the production team decided to change the story to make Judy the main character rather than Nick. To help with the difficulties of the late sudden change, Rich Moore was hired as a director with Byron Howard and Jared Bush.
- The name of the film is changed in several countries. For example, in the UK, the film is called "Zootropolis" while in Germany, it's called "Zoomania". The reason for the name change in the UK was because Disney wanted “to merely allow the film to have a unique title that works for UK audiences” while another reason was the name "Zootopia" is already under copyright in Europe. For these reasons, the word "Zootopia" in dialogue, signs, etc. have been redubbed to "Zootropolis" in the UK.
- In addition of the name change, the character Peter Moosebridge is different in each region's version of the film. Couple of examples being in Brazil, he's a jaguar named Onçardo Boi Chá and voiced by Ricardo Boechat and in the Australian and New Zealand versions, he's a koala named David Koalabell, voiced by David Campbell. Peter Moosebridge remains the same in the Russian, Canadian, French, and UK versions of the film (the latter however was renamed Moosos Alexander and voiced by Veesos Alexander).
