Alright, it's time for the next Cartoon Roots crowdfunding project! Help make this one a reality by contributing today.

The campaign is going so well that I'm already thinking of a stretch goal for an additional project, as well. Let's see how things go. Thanks in advance for your support...

We're now just a little over $2K away from our goal, which has great. Anyone at this forum still looking to pledge? I'm expecting to announce a stretch goal for a separate Cartoon Roots collection once the initial goal is met.

And with that being said, the Dinky Doodle volume is now funded with it's 266th backer, $89 well over it's $16,900 goal!

Thanks everyone! Stay tuned for a nice big stretch goal to be announced sometime soon. I will need a lot more help with it, so there's still going to be plenty of opportunity for anyone here to help if they have not done so already.

Oops, I finally got around to backing this when I saw Leonard Maltin post about it on FB. Enjoying your latest work and looking forward to this one too.

For those wondering how the project is coming along without paying much attention to other areas, I recommend reading today's Kickstarter update,  detailing where each of the planned 15 films are, and some big updates! You'll even get to see a draft of the cover for Inkwell, based on a very rare Bray poster. It seems both are around 2/3rd done restoration wise, with each having a few problematic films

Last month, Tommy gave an extensive backers-only update  that paints the two Kickstarter collections as most definitely coming out next year. Here are some photos to show just how nice the collection is coming, from a publicly available update to address two specific films (RED RIDING HOOD and ALONG CAME FIDO)

For RED RIDING HOOD, a 1920s European nitrate has replaced most of the body of the restoration, replacing a preservation 35mm with issues relating to when it was initially copied from a likely shrunken nitrate. Take a look at the difference

For ALONG CAME FIDO, this cartoon is apart of series of nice 35mm prints with special reissue tracks available for the Pete the Pup cartoons, with the tradeoff being the left edge side. Considering the 35mm preserves more of the top and bottom than the 16mm that doesn't have too much of that missing left to begin with, this is an understandable compromise. And hey, silent reissue tracks are always fun!

It'd be fun to see this. Monetary contribution might not be much from me, though.

You probably should of read this thread before saying that, as this is in response to a Kickstarter whose funding period was 3 years ago, and I was giving an update to forum users who may not of kept up with Tommy's latest update. That may sound like a long period, but this set, along with Back to the Inkwell, will be coming out this new year. I look forward to both very much

Since this seems like the right place to talk about this, I'd like to say the Lantz-Bray cartoons have recently been of interest to me, and I'm glad that most of these survive (albeit out of circulation), as from what I've seen their quite entertaining. I recently received a DVD full of 1920s silents, mostly cartoons out of circulation. One of these was the Dinky PETER PAN HANDLED (to be featured on this very set!), telling the tale of Peter Pan. It came from a mid 1930s silent print that seems to of been intended as apart of a sound reissue that never got released theatrically (cropped for a track, no intertitles). Despite this, the cartoon was easy to follow

The cartoon starts with Lantz cooking some eggs for himself, plus Dinky and Weakheart to comic effect. Meanwhile, Peter Pan is outside enjoying himself to their milk bottle delivery, Lantz tries to stomp him like a bug but only catches his shadow, putting it in a safe. When the gang is asleep, Peter comes inside to recover his shadow, and then introduces himself to Dinky and Weakheart who come with him to Neverland. Instead of Tinkerbell, the boys use balloons. When they arrive in Neverland, the cartoon becomes a funny chase between the Lost Boys and Captain Hook and Smee, which eventually leads them back to Lantz's apartment where he beats the crap out of the two Pirates while the gang cheers him on. There were lots of fun gags (Limburger Cheese chasing away skunks, Smee cleaning Hook with his beard, Bear kissing Weakheart and using his nose for pool), as well as some quick little animated takes throughout for additional humor, something that was common in Lantz's silents, probably as a quick gag. A particularly good one is when Smee's beard comes off in a scene as a question mark and lands on Hook's jaw.

The print wasn't the best looking (see below), but this old blog  has many photos from the Cartoon Factory airing which should satisfy those here. Additionally, Tommy's Kickstarter updates mention that a 35mm is the primary for his restoration, which'll be nice to see soon

Additionally, I've gotten to see DINKY DOODLE IN EGYPT from another source. After Lantz leaves them to clean at home to go to a party, the primary action takes place in a Chariot Race between Dinky and a mummy (parodying the recent BEN HUR) for an Egyptian princess' hand. It was an even funnier cartoon, lots of good gags and funny drawings. It was even better than PAN HANDLED and the animation was a notable step up, feeling a bit more looser and flexible. I can't wait for more of these to be available if they maintain a good average like these entries!

Any set month/day for the Blu-ray/DVD's release date?

Tommy has issued a new update for the Kickstarter.  There's one BIG piece of news I won't spoil, but I will share where progress is on both sets for those who didn't back it

DINKY DOODLE:
Mostly complete, although 3 films are getting needed upgrades and two films are awaiting cleanup once other films are complete

INKWELL:
Only three films need some form of work which will likely wrap up next month!

I'm VERY excited for the final results soon!

At Tommy's Cartoon Carnival yesterday, I felt lucky to see another Dinky Doodle cartoon, this one being CINDERELLA. It again presents a nice view of the series, being funny and with good gags. Lantz takes Dinky to the ball, but Weakheart and Cinderella are left at home to do the dishes. Weakheart immediately abandons Cinderella as he "has a date", when in reality he too has tickets to the Ball, inviting a random Alley Cat to be his partner. Cinderella's Fairy Godmother shows up to finish the job with some stop motion effects, and off she goes to the ball as a Flapper. Dinky, who does not recognize her, falls in love and they of course dance till midnight, where she leaves one slipper, keeping the other. She plays it quiet while doing her cleaning the next day at Dinky goes to search for the girl, until Lantz (jokingly) suggests to try Cinderella, in which it works and they fall in love, while the Godmother comes back to give Lantz his due, to which I won't spoil. Again, these Lantz-Brays are very funny and I'm delighted to see more become available!
