Now i've been thinking, has Warner actually used the orignal negs for the resorations of any post 1951/2 MGM short? This certianly might have been the case for the Cinemascope ones, but i'm still unsure for the ones beforehand. Seeing what Thad said made me think that they also used IP's for them, but again, I'm still unsure.

Here are some stills from the HD-restored version of "Dixieland Droopy" (1955), first released on DVD in 2007 and later in full HD on Boomerang's streaming service. This is from the 1080p streaming release (a Blu-ray edition would logically look somewhat sharper). Press the images to see them in full size. Beautiful colors.

Tom and Jerry is considered a "family" brand by Warner, Tex Avery is not. That's the big difference. Remember, all the cartoons on the 2007 Droopy DVD set were complete and uncut -- including films like "Droopy's Good Deed", which was even edited on the old LaserDisc release.

Didn’t the laser disc have HALF PINT PYGMY, UNCLE TOM’S CABANA, and BIG HEEL-WATHA unedited?

This is a much needed and anticipated relase!!!! I stumbled across the good news about 8 hours ago and got very excited, almost couldn't believe it.

Altough the cartoons contain many offensive scenes, they were products of their time, and I hope to see all offensive scenes uncut, because doing so also adds historic value to the experience.

Nonetheless, MGM Tex Avery cartoons 1942-1957 are one of the greatest animation outputs of all times!!! A must-see for any animation student and for us, enthusiasts. Technically faultless in terms of animation (not so much in terms of plot).

The day has come!!! I'll have to change my signature!!!
I always come to TTTP in Exile in the hope of finding news about Warner announcing Tex Avery Collection.

Damn, that does look good. Those screenshots look as if one took a photo of the cell itself.

Thad posted an interesting comment about the versions of Avery shorts seen as special features on recent WAC Blu-rays over on the blu-ray.com forum . I'm not a member there, so I thought I'd repost it here...

As was The Cuckoo Clock on Summer Stock. Both presentations are by far the worst looking I've ever seen a cartoon look on a major studio release; just raw, non-wet-gated scans of deposit prints at the Library of Congress. Really embarrassing - even my 16mm from the '80s MGM TV package of Little Rural Riding Hood has better color. It might have been a good idea to "leak" restored versions on those live-action discs, just as a tease (as they did with a few Warner cartoons in 2003 before the Golden Collections). But we'll just have to wait and see when this release comes out.

I'm not surprised to hear that "The Cuckoo Clock" looked bad on the Summer Stock Blu-ray, considering how "Little Rural Riding Hood" looks on the Battleground Blu-ray. But, does this mean that "The Cuckoo Clock" was also a raw scan in true HD, like the Blu-ray version of "Little Rural Riding Hood" was? It's hard to find info (or even screenshots) of this.

Yes... Full HD. Very plugged looking colors. Extremely dirty.

I was reprimanded for calling this out when I bought Summer Stock last year and saw what WAC had put out, but to the best of my knowledge these were one-off bonus features and NOT reflective of the upcoming release(s) of Avery cartoons. Even so.

Ah! Thanks, Thad -- it's great to have this cleared up at long last. That's another already-released-in-HD Avery short to cross off on the list. ;)

I remember you criticizing the Summer Stock Blu-ray release of "The Cuckoo Clock" earlier, and it certainly deserves criticism with the colors looking like this. But to be honest, a Facebook comment that you posted at the Bugs Bunny Video Guide ages ago was what actually had me confused, as you said then that it WASN'T in true HD. And it turns out it actually was. 😉 Good to finally know, in any case.

According to a YouTube comment, the cover art images are from the following shorts:
Little Rural Riding Hood (1949)
The Chump Champ (1950)
Drag-a-long Droopy (1954)

Hoping that those shorts aren't actually on the first volume or chronological order (at least from the beginning) isn't looking very likely.

all the art has been lifted from the tex avery dvds sold in france so its likely they just cobbled together what they had

Precisely. I don't think the cover art has any direct relevance to which shorts will be on the disc. They are restoring the cartoons now, but Warner Archive is obviously still trying to keep costs down when it comes to packaging, cover art, etc.

Hopefully, we’ll be finding out exactly what’s on this set on Tuesday.

I actually really hope they’re taking a chronological approach. The good thing about many of Tex Avery’s one-shots is that they were never re-issued, like most of the Tom and Jerrys, and therefore, survive with their original titles.

It’s gonna be a REVELATION to see the 1943-1946 MGM cartoons in newly restored form...I can hardly wait!!!

I wonder if The Shooting of Dan McGoo will have its original titles and cigarette gags restored?

I doubt it, but it would certainly be a nice surprise if that were to be the case.
