According to this Twitter post , a new animated web series starring Popeye will be premiering this Sunday. Titled Popeye's Island Adventures, the series will be hosted on the sailor's official YouTube channel.

Holy shit, that's one day away! I really hadn't thought the Popeye YouTube series would debut so soon... one day before the new Woody Woodpecker series, no less. Here's hoping these Popeye cartoons look much better.

Apparently, his corn cob pipe is being replaced by a whistle this time around (and just like Genndy's version, most aren't pleased)

Genndy Tartakovsky's animation test  was fantastic regardless of the pipe missing. It had so much affection and love for the Fleischer cartoons, as well as some of the most impressively cartoony CG animation I've seen. I'd have gladly gone to see an animated Popeye feature directed by Genndy whether the pipe was there or not.

But if you simply aren't allowed to use the pipe, I'm honestly not sure what the best solution is... remove it altogether, or replace it with something as gimmicky and silly as this whistle apparently is.

These YouTube cartoons signal to me that King Features has given up on Sony ever actually making their theatrical Popeye feature (or at least, realizing it's very far off at this point)... so now, they're rebooting him themselves. I'm a little sad they aren't just letting Popeye keep his pipe, because on YouTube they don't have to deal with television's Broadcast Standards and Practices. But I guess they're still afraid of getting complaints and backlash about it.

How they managed to pull it off is a mystery, but this is worse than I think anyone could have ever imagined . I can't describe in words how much I'm now looking forward to getting "Popeye the Sailor: The 1940s Volume 1" on Blu-ray.

Well, at least it explains why Popeye doesn't have a pipe.....

I saw it and I didn't think it was that bad. I try to keep an open-mind and remember what Jerry Beck said that whatever it is they're making that may seem foreign to us, they're making it for kids and kids will love this. Besides, if they love this, they'll want more and that's when the parents/relatives will step in and introduce them to the classics. ;)

It's a way for kids to fall in love with a classic character. Isn't that a good thing?

Admittedly, that's the only work around with the pipe issue nowadays (either that or go with the merchandise and have no pipe). Sony had the same explanation in their YouTube comments.

They've uploaded a second episode.

I dare you to watch it.

And it looks like they learned a lesson from all of those kooky vids with people dressed like spider-man and Disney princesses. If you’re producing these for kids, do it without dialogue. You get literally tens of millions of views from kids in other countries who don’t speak English.

My six year old nephew showed me those things a year ago, I thought it was the stupidest stuff ever, until my brother showed me how many views they get. Perhaps the King Features folks are trying to catch similar lightning in a bottle with Popeye content.

Pat Powers had the same mindset to an extent. He wanted Mickey cartoons to have a universal manner of expression by having little to no dialogue.
