Mid Century Modern 1 is coming back from replication on Wednesday!

Yesterday was a really good day here-- and today continues the flurry of dubbing and packing. The goal is to be caught up with all the orders and the pre-orders that are finished. Yesterday I did more scans in Toronto, and this week more are getting done here in Michigan. I had a chance to inspect prints this morning that arrived while I was gone-- so can finally announce this:

Popeye in Technicolor Blu-ray

This is a 'semi- official' blu-ray, limited to 100 copies, featuring Fleischer and Famous Studio Popeye cartoons, mostly from IB Technicolor prints, including a very rare 'Popeye Meets Sindbad' from an original IB Tech/ Nitrate print. It will be in a standard Blu-ray case with cover art. Details here!

This sounds amazing. But I'm a little sad to read that it will only be a 'semi-official' release, and thus only a BDR (rather than a pressed Blu-ray). Some of Thunderbean's "Special Disc" BDRs have had encoding/burning problems. I hope this set will receive better quality control.

By the way, will the cartoons be restored, or are they raw transfers?

I would LOVE a Popeye Blu-ray set! The color Popeyes are in such dire need for restoration--or, at the very least, new transfers--and I don't see Warner undertaking that task anytime in the forseeable future, that I'd be happy to see ANY of the color Famous Popeyes released on disc...especially Blu-ray.

There was an issue on that set with the end title music on that short being incorrect. The print used in the transfers looks like the one from the Library of Congress posted online a while back. (Steve, can you confirm this?) That print has the correct end music.

Facebook update  from Thunderbean assistant Kimi (posted 15 minutes ago):

"...for everyone wondering about Popeye, we are hoping to finish production on that and have it out before the end of the year. However as Steve has said, Flip the Frog is what we are primarily focusing on at the moment."

I'm surpriced; since the Popeye disc is 'semi-official' (Thunderbean's wording) I had assumed that the prints of the cartoons were raw transfers ready to go. But now I'm wondering. Does this mean the films on "Popeye in Technicolor" will be cleaned up and restored?

That's a whole lot of assuming. After all, there are MANY other discs already in progress before this one gets attention. And besides scans, there's a cover and menu to produce, etc.

I have close to 20 Thunderbean pre-orders right now, so I would think that that places things in perspective. It's hard to worry about a recent preorder, with so many others in the hopper.

I always assume that my order will take 1-2 years.

Not joking, and not frustrated. That's just the way Thunderbean works.

Kimi at Thunderbean has now confirmed on Facebook  that the Popeye cartoons will be restored. 🙂

Now that news was said I really can’t wait until this Popeye set comes out. I’m so glad I preordered it. Superrrr excitedddd
