Remember a few weeks back a few us were saying we'd like to collect the early Donald Duck and Silly Symphony newspaper strips? Well, here's an interview that's full of good news:

Thanks for sharing the article, Mac. I'm really looking forward to the new collection of Donald newspaper comics.

Just got it ordered, but why isn't Fantagraphics doing this and how do we know it won't be censored?

I was surprised this wasn't a Fantagraphics Volume when I first saw it too. However, after reading that interview (and taking a quick gander at reviews for some of their previous collections), I feel pretty confident this series is in good hands.

To be sure, David Gerstein and the team at Fantagraphics have set the absolute gold standard for chronological releases of Disney comic strips with the Mickey Mouse books. The strips look great and are uncensored, plus the commentary and extras are fantastic. The commentary really puts the strips into context, not only of what was going on in the rest of the Disney Studio at the time, but in the world of popular culture. The supplemental artwork and essays flesh out much more about the artists who created them, complete the history of the strips beyond their initial printing and present fascinating, relevant storyboards, posters and other art which, in many cases, I have never seen reproduced elsewhere.

Everything in the interview sounds like Bruce Canwell and IDW are planning a similar kind of release for Donald, with plans for separate releases for the Donald Colour Sundays and also the Silly Symphonies. The plan is for a complete collection just as long as sales are good enough. I don't know for sure that this set won't be censored in some way, but this doesn't look to me like the kind of release that would be.

BTW, you probably already know this, but IDW are the publishers of the new American Disney comics too.

Mac, thanks a million!!
I din't know about this release and I owe it to your post! And I see there are plans for Silly Simphonies and Donald sundays as well!!
Terrific! I've already pre-ordered my copy and I suggest you to do the same, the more they sell the more of these releases we'll see in the future!
