I have been trying to preorder for a couple of days now, but the link IAD > Cartoon Research > Thunderbean doesn't direct me to the Snafu preorder. Has the preorder time frame ended / expired?

When you get to Thunderbean, don't click the "PRE-ORDER NOW" link -- just read the text above it and send your payment through PayPal.

I think Steve's flurry of activity is fantastic, but now I am a little mixed up on what is coming out when. I have marked on my calendar that the Willy Whopper set comes out tomorrow. Since I have heard nothing recently on this, I am guessing it is delayed to get SNAFU out. Anybody (Steve?) have a clearer picture of what and when? Thanks!

Willie isn't ready yet! His whereabouts and appearance will be sometime soon.. but the set is far from done at this moment, though making really good progress every day. Snafu is looking really great and getting there fast as well. Willie Whopper, Flip the Frog, an Abbott and Costello rarities and the Lou Bunin set all in some sort of progress right now at the studio space.

They're all taking longer than the too-ambitious schedule allowed for so far, but happily getting there....

The big debate on Willie right now is whether or not we should get the one 35mm Nitrate film we didn't. We have that particular title in a survivable 16mm element, but it makes some sense to get the best on 'every' film for the set, and if we didn't get this one we wouldn't have that - though everything else is from the best elements we've found, with the majority coming from the 35mm materials at UCLA and the Academy. These range from original negs to fine grains to prints. Some are from 16mm fine grains directly made from the 35mm neg or master positive. It's expensive to get that one film here since it's nitrate, and a nitrate Hasmat package needs to be sent both ways.. or I can try to get it done out there without supervising, and that may work...

For the record though, Willie isn't delayed *for* Snafu.. in fact, Willie is just a little closer to being done than Snafu. They're happening sort of at the same time. I have the menus all done for Snafu, but not for Willie- but Willie has all but 3 of the films all cleaned up- plus the handful of original title sequences that were not in 35mm are all scanned and cleaned up too. On Snafu, we're waiting to try and get a better print on 'The Goldbrick'. We just transferred a 16mm, and it doesn't have the scratch that the NARA one does, but it's softer focus-wise. It's looking like the 35mm on that title is too fragile to use, though I'm trying some creative arm twisting in this situation and may end up going out to beg them to let me 4k it to preserve it. There are 8 films on the set all told I want to upgrade in some way- mostly things from 'A Few Quick Facts' series. All the rest are finished/cleaned up. Watched Willie in 'The Caveman' from the neg earlier tonight and nearly cried...just beautiful, like it was shot yesterday.

Thanks Steve, and great update! I for one will always vote for the sets out a little later with the very best possible elements. Hope most here feel the same. Oh yes, let me make my recurring pitch for a SCRAPPY Blu-ray set!!

Update from Steve!:

http://forum.blu-ray.com...863292&postcount=605

"Snafu is looking great, and almost done. NARA just allowed us to use the negs on of two of the films (Goldbrick and No Buddy Atoll) and a better FGMP (fine grain) on one of the others- that's a good upgrade; this should be transferring early next week. That was some serious arm twisting, but the National Archive folks are pretty wonderful. These titles were from the 16mm materials on the DVD version because the 35mm fine grains were damaged. The rest of the set is assembled now, happily, save one fix on a commentary track. We'll have it sent to replication at some point this month, along with Willie Whopper (that set is also almost done).

Thunderbean is a tiny operation, and I do hope to be better at release dates and communication. I finally have much more time to work on the sets since I don't teach right now, so major progress is made without me bottlenecking things in details. These days, we have a small part-time crew working on cleanup and restoration on the various titles, and there are six in some progress right now (Willie, Flip the Frog, Abbott and Costello rarities, Snafu, the Lou Bunin puppet set and one I can't talk about yet)."

Lots of stuff got done on Willie this week..... I'm super excited at the progress on the set! This week's cartoon research will be about some of the digital restoration work on the series.

Snafus look so cool in hd all cleaned up too! I wish they had made a few in color- but I also wish the Hook cartoon would show up again so we could do an HD on them!

Over in the "Stills - On Our way to IB Technicolor" thread, Steve wrote today that there's been a setback with the lab applying DNR to some of the transfers, which will have to be redone . . . .

OK thanks, Elvis. No problem for me, just didn't want to get missed.

Snafu will be done in replication this week. We hope to start shipping on Friday. I'll be out of town, but we're already getting the envelopes addressed...thanks to everyone for their support on these things. So happy to have the new set coming back and to everyone.
