Original voice by Lillian Randolph

Reanimated voice by June Foray

In the 1960s, MGM Animation/Visual Arts, under the supervision of Chuck Jones, reanimated
cartoons featuring Mammy for television. (1963/1964)
The reanimated versions replaced Mammy with a similarly stocky or thin white woman.
The reanimated versions also replaced Lillian Randolph's voice, questionable objects and blackface gags.
June Foray was brought in to redub the soundtracks.
The redubbed soundtracks was to remove Mammy's use of potentially offensive dialect.

Redubbed voice by Thea Vidale

In the 1990s, Turner Entertainment Company, under the supervision of Ted Turner, redubbed
cartoons featuring Mammy for television. (1992)
The redubbed versions replaced Lillian Randolph's voice.
Thea Vidale was brought in to redub the soundtracks.
The redubbed soundtracks was to remove Mammy's use of potentially offensive dialect.

The following is to help identify between the 3 known official releases on DVD, Laserdisc and VHS by audio. Timeline is based on NTSC

The sources I used are from

USA (1) NTSC DVD Laserdisc VHS Only
J Japan (2) NTSC DVD Laserdisc Only
E Europe (2) PAL DVD Only
A Australia (4) PAL DVD Only
H Hong Kong NTSC Laserdisc Only

I cut the cord to TV 15 years ago, to much censored cartoons, too much $$ and way too many commercials. So I have spent my time looking for what I like best, cartoons of my younger years.

What I find most interesting is, across the later formats Mammy's appearances are few in uncensored form. The UK got a couple that haven't been released here in the US. Japan also released them both, but Mouse Cleaning was censored/redubbed. Then to flip the boarders, the US got the rest, thou there was issues with the Spotlight Collections, but now that is resolved.

Now for what I would like to find or see released officially, would be the reanimated with June Foray. Speaking of which, I was always aware of 4 Saturday Evening Puss. Soooo

I knew about the re-dubbing, but didn't know how many there were or that some scenes were re-animated.

Also, it look me until Tom and Jerry Tales for me the realize that Mammy Two Shoes was racist...

What I find intresting about those are that they only ever attempted at re-animate Mammy two-shoes twice considering that they redubbed her in almost every cartoon.

ps I applogy for bumping 4 year old post.

I wouldn't call her racist, yes, there is the maid aspect, but by the time the of "Part Time Pal" (47) it is already suggested that she is the sole owner of the house. Cartoons like "Saturday Evening Puss" (50) seem to support this idea as well. A strong, independent African-American woman that owns her own house seems pretty progresive for cartoons of the 40's-50's. It was a shame that she was replaced by Joan in the later cartoons. Compared to Mammy, she seemed bland and uninspired.

Besides, even with calling Mammy racist, there are FAR worse depcitions of African-Americans in cartoons of this period. Just watch any of the Censored Eleven.

Lillian Randolph was actually an african-American so I actually find it pretty racist ot be honest to redub her with the white actress June Foray with all due respect to June Foray's legacy. But at least Thea Vidale is african-american like Lillan Randolph

not sure what you mean by "twice" considering the majority of tom and jerry cartoons aired on cbs had the maid reanimated to become white, except for oddly enough mouse cleaning. there are also june foray-dubbed versions of the framed cat and puss gets the boot but the only image elements ive seen for those aren't reanimated.

SATURDAY EVENING PUSS, The Framed Cat
are the only cartoons mentioned that do have her reanimated, rest of them don't.

and all that was reanimated in The Little Orpan was the knife, and the indian head gear after it was burnt.

So I'm simply not assuming everything was reanimated in terms of mammy unless there is some short confirmation it was.

Fascinating. The cel of Tom in this reshot version has been wrongly placed on TOP of the cels of the robot cat and Mammy. The original version  has no such problems, of course (see 01:30).

UserPostedImage

I would really like to see the reanimated version of that whole shot. I'm guessing they at least noticed the mistake before getting to frames like these?

Those look more like recoloring than actual re-animation. Since Mammy in those three shorts does retain her busty features in Framed Cat and Saturday Evening Puss she was seemingly completely diffrent ie Slim Irish Girl.

With that said These are the shorts I have manage confirm that have had re-animation/re-coloring to them:

*The Little Orphan

https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=316911839221209
The Framed Cat
*Dog Trouble

*The Truce Hurts
*Triplet Trouble
Push-Button Kitty
Nit-Witty Kitty

(*)
(stills only, so not putting this link anywhere above)

But considering the converstation somone needs to seriously track down those 1960s CBS boardcast masters so we can know for sure how many of the shorts had recolorizion/re-animation done to them.
