Not many people know that the recent international "Top Cat" animated movie (soon movies) were done by Anima Estodios the same studio that did the recent animated version of Roberto Gomez Bolanos' "El Chavo". However, it was recently reported that a pilot for an earlier attempt of animating the live-action sitcom has been found and it was done by Hanna-Barberra. In 1979, near the end of the original live-action run of "El Chavo", Bolanos commissioned Hanna-Barberra to do an animated "El Chavo" that would air in Mexico. Most of the original actors would reprise their role for this animated version including Ramon Valdez (who just left the show) and Maria Antoieta De Las Nieves. Thus, unlike the later version Nieves' character, Don Ramon's daughter is included (they couldn't get the likeness right's in the later version, so part of her personality was transfer to Popis who was a minor character on the live-action show as well as the H-B pilot).
The resulting pilot is surprisingly well done. The designs like for the characters were more modeled after the actors. Since Mexico didn't have a parent code like we had in the states at the time, all of the slap-stick violence from the live-action show was retained for the pilot including the numerous times Don Ramon slaps El Chavo. Which leads to the reason why the show didn't get off the ground. Hanna-Barberra wanted this show to also air in the states and was slated to do an English dub for the pilot. Unfortunately, the Parent Group saw this and demanded that the violence be completely toned down for the US. Bolanos declined and the show was never made.
Thankfully, the pilot has been found and been uploaded on Youtube.
