Yellow Submarine

As promised, we're featuring this cartoon this week as a way of introducing a new feature on the website - high resolution screenshots. We've just posted them for "Yellow Submarine." There should be a link about the normal screenshots which will take you to the new page. There, clicking on any of the thumbnails will give you the larger image. It will automatically scale itself to whatever device you're using, but if you right click and save it, you'll have the hi-res copy.

So ... the mist obvious question we can ask about "Yellow Submarine" is how well does it hold up after almost 50 years? As a confirmed Beatlemaniac, it's difficult for me to be objective about it, but I would say definitely yes. It's difficult to think of any animation since that has been this fearless in it's imaginative scale. Granted that it was made in the middle of the psychedelic movement and when the Beatles were at the peak of their popularity. Tastes have toned down a bit since then. But for me, it still remains as fresh as when it was first made.

What's your opinion on this cartoon?

Fantastic film, with a distinctive look, style, and tone that both reflected and influenced the late 60s just superbly.

The Eleanor Rigby sequence is probably my favourite part from an aesthetic point of view, but there are loads of things to enjoy throughout. The pacing is occasionally a little off, feeling as it does rather episodic at times (not unlike Disney's Alice in Wonderland), but it always links back to a song and so everything works out just fine. The film does peter out a little right at the very end, and the apparent grand finale (before the live action section) isn't as memorable as it could have been. But given that production was completed in record time - not much more than a year from go-ahead to premiere - it's hard to see how it could have been much better.

Probably Britain's finest contribution to the world of animation, in my humble opinion.

A very groovy film, but why are we doing feature films as discussions of the week? I thought we were just doing shorts.

Well, Ok. I do have an idea of film to be a future discussion. It's a certain 1978 animated film based on a serious novel with rabbits. However, I haven't watched the whole film. It was on "Showtimes' On Demand channel in 2007 and I just skimmed through it one morning. Since I was still going to high school back then, I didn't have time to watched the whole film.
