The Anipages forum had a post like this...seemed like we could use one!

To start off with, who animated Daffy's giant eyeball take in Book Revue?

Unfortunately, I'm not sure who animated that giant take. The credited animators in "Book Revue" are Bill Melendez, Manny Gould, Rod Scribner, and Robert McKimson. (The former three were all crazy animators.)

Anyways, does anybody know who animated this  very strange-looking Ralph Wolf running during the climactic scene in "Steal Wool"? He looks primitive compared to how he is in the rest of the cartoon, almost like he came out of a post-1964 WB cartoon; in fact, he looks normal later on in the same scene! (After all the stuff has crashed into him, that is.)

The credited animators are typical for Jones's unit in 1957: Richard Thompson, Ken Harris, and Abe Levitow.

I believe that was done by Rod Scribner.

It could have also been done by Bill Melendez. Melendez, after all, had been Scribner's assistant, and was known to create insane animation of his own.

By the way, was the scene in "The Invisible Mouse" where Jerry jumps into the invisible ink bottle and Tom searches for him  done by Don Patterson? It bears at least a slight resemblance in style to Patterson's scene in "A Mouse in the House", with Tom's rather wide eyes, the solid-colored pupils (most of the other animators at this time had a white "shine" in the eyes, so to speak; I know that Irven Spence also tended to have solid-colored pupils in his animation at this point, though), and the fur sticking out of Tom's cheeks. There's also quite a bit of distortion whenever Tom turns his head in this scene.

It's Manny Gould. It's a little more subdued than Scribner's or Melendez's work.

Thanks much! (By the way, are you Devon Baxter?) Now we at this forum can give Gould credit for animating that giant eye.

Now if someone could answer my questions about Steal Wool and The Invisible Mouse... (By the time Steal Wool was made, Jones's animators were getting harder to identify—I know Abe Levitow had been Ken Harris's assistant, and apparently drew more angularly—while Tom and Jerry animators tend to be distinguishable.)

Invisible Mouse: I would say yes to Don Patterson.
Steal Wool: Ken Harris.

Thanks everyone! However, I asked Mark Kausler about it afterwards--he didn't know about the eyeball take, but he thinks Manny Gould animated the earlier bit where Daffy scat sings. And the animators must have switched, because the characters are drawn very differently...

So perhaps credit must go to Bill Melendez for that giant eyeball take then!

If Mark Kausler says somebody animated something, then it's got to be that person. (And I must add that the tongue similarity is very convincing, as regards Melendez—though the eyes look different between "Book Revue" and "The Great Piggy Bank Robbery".)

Is anyone good at spotting Preston Blair's animation? There doesn't seem to be much info on the scenes he did at MGM other than "Red's" dances and the drawings in his book.

Who animated the scene of the hotel manager tumbling down all the stairs in Porky Pig's Feat? The one credited animator is Phil Monroe. (I know Art Davis did the earlier scene in which Daffy confronts the hotel manager to his face.)

Not sure about this one. Thad said Phil Monroe did the following scene where Porky turns Daffy's head towards the manager. It looks like Izzy Ellis, Dick Bickenbach, and Cal Dalton also animated on it. I'd try comparing the way they draw Daffy to the Birth Of A Notion breakdown on Cartoon Research.

EDIT: Actually, I think Bickenbach was in Freleng's unit at the time.

I know he did the opening scene of Screwball Squirrel and the "Kill the umpire!" scene from Batty Baseball.

For Disney, I know he did Mickey getting dragged and dunked by the broom in Fantasia.

In Blitz Wolf, Blair animates the following:
-- "Sergeant Pork" warning his two brothers about Adolph Wolf
-- Adolph Wolf threatening to blow the straw house pig's house down and his reasoning with Adolph
-- The final scene with Adolph in Hell

Opening to vultures taking off after rabbit: Ray Abrams
Tug-of-war with rabbit: Preston Blair
Vultures pretending to leave ("So long, Joe!"): Ed Love
Buzzard pulled behind rock to stew pot: Ray Abrams
Vulture stew scene: Ed Love
Vulture flies out of pot to chasing with knife: Ray Abrams
Snake scene: Preston Blair
Vulture painting rock as meat to buzz saw scene: Ed Love
Vultures hacking at each other with pick/axe to ending: Preston Blair
