Some good news in the world of Disney on physical media; Disney will release a new compilation of classic shorts on Blu-ray/DVD through the Disney Movie Club (so far) on January 31st to commemorate the studio's 100th anniversary. Best part; it's the FIRST VOLUME with maybe more to come!!!:

List of shorts:

https://forum.blu-ray.co...78495&postcount=5766

-Figaro and Frankie (NEW TO BLU-RAY)
-On Ice (NEW TO BLU-RAY)
-Thru the Mirror
-The Brave Little Tailor
-Mickey's Delayed Date (NEW TO BLU-RAY)
-Mr. Mouse Takes a Trip (NEW TO BLU-RAY)
-Bath Day (RESTORED AND REMASTERED IN HD)
-The Little Whirlwind
-Steamboat Willie
-Hawaiian Holiday (NEW TO BLU-RAY)

I know it doesn't seem much, but it is a good start and better than nothing! I say buy this release to show your support and make it sell to help make MORE volumes possible.

I mean, this was made during a time Disney is celebrating their 100th anniversary, so it would make a load of sense to release such.

Since my first love has always been the Disney cartoons, I'm really excited about this disc and what it might possibly mean for the future. At the very least, it means that Disney hasn't completely given up on physical media, so the possibilities for a complete set (or maybe a BluRay update of the Disney Treasures sets) seem a little less unrealistic.

Any chance this will be released in Europe as well? We didn't get Celebrating Mickey and Disney makes their releases region-locked.

This is an incredibly low effort. The only hope for golden age releases of Disney shorts and movies is in the future, after everything falls in the public domain. Hopefully some state-sponsored initiative or institution will do the job of making the antiquities/vintage material depicting a defunct society available to the general public.
I always come to TTTP in Exile in the hope of finding news about Warner announcing Tex Avery Collection.

This is basically just a cheapie cash-in on the small number of HD-restored shorts they've done so far.

This is gonna be par, unless someone can convince Disney that a comprehensive restoration of their whole shorts library is needed and worthwhile.

I believe all shorts before 1952 are already restored in 4K, just not all released.

A while back on one of the Maltins' livestream, a now retired restoration directer at Disney was on the chat and I asked him about the shorts. He said over 120 shorts (I know, it's not a lot) were restored before he left but when they will be added on Disney + or Blu-Ray is unknown. I did wish I ask if any were black and white.

They have everything scanned (in their library) in 4K, though no more than 30% of the material is in a HD "Restoration", from Thad K to me on FB.

His database for these mediocre HD remasters did not include the Figaro cartoons, so I am curious how they'll look. That said, this is a pass for me.

As per the B&W question, I don't think many of them. Maybe a dozen at best?

The irony is, most of the 4K prints would probably look much better if they just released them as raw scans rather than "restore" them in typical Disney fashion.

More great news! The release is set for wide retail February 7th (a week after being available on DMC):

https://www.walmart.com/...-Digital-Code/2223273964

So far, there's only a Wal-Mart listing, but you'll get an exclusive pin.

I must again remind you that this is the first volume of hopefully many and if you want to see more (and maybe bigger), I recommend pre-ordering this right now, I sure plan to after the holidays!!

Speaking of, a friend of mine has reported that the release is already a hit seller on the DMC!

Was it Bossert or Gluck? That figure more or less matches my list, which is several years old at this point. Sadly.

To the best of my knowledge only a VERY few black-and-white sound shorts got remastered in HD...

STEAMBOAT WILLIE
MICKEY’S ORPHANS
MICKEY’S GOOD DEED
YE OLDEN DAYS
GULLIVER MICKEY

And that's all... Considering how ghastly they look, maybe it's a good thing lasting damage hasn't been done until someone like David Gerstein can supervise it.

It was Gluck who retired in 2020. I was trying to purposely not mention his name knowing how "loved" he is by some hardcore classic animation fans (and avoiding a slight tangent in the thread).

Amazon listing's up!:
https://www.amazon.com/M...IC-SHORTS/dp/B0BRQMWJCK/

Remember, the more this sells, the more Disney will see there's a still a demand for the classic shorts on home video, and the more they'll give us bigger and better!

We have a mission, everyone now let's accomplish it.

Got my DMC copy in the mail today and playing it right now. Also logging the shorts on the disc in the order they appear (spoiler: it's not chronologically).

Got mine as well. Not a bad release, but the interstitials between the shorts are just too cute and I did notice some redrawn title cards (i.e. "On Ice.")

So I'm guessing that means in addition to On Ice, Thru the Mirror's titles are still the fake ones as well?

Any of the original titles for the other shorts preserved for this release?

While I'm here, the release on Amazon is currently at #775 in Movies & TV BUT #22 in Anime (hate when they lump Western Animation and Anime together. They're BOTH animation yes, but there's a difference).

Let's try and get it into the Top 100 for the former by 2/7 and keep it there for quite a while. Fortunately, more volumes are on the way so we still have a chance to make some strides.

The Blu-ray disc (now available!) is now at #197 in Movies & TV and #88 in Blu-ray on Amazon. Doing good right now. 🙂

Well, the two Figaro shorts have their accurate card (Bath Day retains its RKO titles, while Figaro and Frankie is from a BV reissue). All the others were sourced from the masters that permeated the 2010's.
