Why has it never been officially released in the US, is there a problem with the musical rights or something like that?

from what I what I understand it was shelved from the United States, because of the graphic content.

probably a blemish in the eyes of Hanna Barbera (except for Joe Barbera according to the late Michael Sporn) ABC television (and maybe even Warner Bros)

Music rights can be an issue too.

You would think they'd dump this on a Warner Archive by now. It's not that bad. It's PG at most. We're not talking The Censored Eleven or Ken Russell's The Devils here.

Admitedly I don't have a definite answer to why Hanna Barbera, Turner, Taft and Warner Bros still never did any home video release and TV showings,

maybe ask someone who worked on the film or maybe some experts like Jerry Beck. also you could ask George Faltinstein of the Warner Archive Colection.

My guess is that the music rights might be the big problem. It used a lot of songs own by different companies and this is not at all cheap to get clearance of for a home release.
