All of Disney's nitrate-era material have reportedly been scanned in 4k but, by my count, a little over 90 cartoons have trickled out through various outlets (Have a Laugh, the German Donald Duck blu-ray, Netflix, the TCM broadcasts etc.). Of course, this is not taking in consideration the quality of the restorations themselves. Most of the recently restored Silly Symphonies look very questionable to me (and others here) but the majority of shorts I've seen that were restored as part of the Have a Laugh program actually look reasonably good.

I'm happy to post the list if there's interest.

I've been expanding out into other non-LT/MM classic animation, such as Tex Avery's Droopy and some Walter Lantz stuff, and I know next to nothing about Disney....so yeah, I'd be interested. In fact, I was under the impression that Disney had already restored and remastered everything except Song of the South. But even if that were true, a sub-forum for this would still be the "go to" place for discussion of such matters as the quality.

Having a complete filmography with dvd/bluray availability is of course very important and convenient, but for me the next most important issue is the preservation of these classics through restoration and remastering. It would be nice to have a sub forum dedicated to the current state of restored/remastered classic cartoons for all the studios, which wouldn't be cluttered with any other off topic details.

"Mad as a Mars Hare" and "Dr. Devil and Mr. Hare" had their widescreen problems corrected on the first volume of the Looney Tunes Platinum Collection.

"Book Revue" had its interlacing problem corrected on the second Platinum Collection.

"The Big Snooze" and "Gorilla My Dreams" had their DVNR corrected on the third Platinum Collection.

I deleted the bonus cartoons except for "Sniffles Takes a Trip" (restored for Mouse Chronicles), "Hippety Hopper" (restored for Marsupial Mayhem), and "Boyhood Daze" because it was included on the first Platinum Collection so I'm assuming it was restored for it (let me know if I'm wrong about that).

I also removed any references to "cropped for widescreen" because I've been going back and listening to Jerry Beck on Stu's Show and he seemed confident that they were all restored in the correct aspect ratio. The fact that we can't see all but two of them corrected on home video is irrelevant to this list. I don't get Boomerang where I'm at so I'm crap out of luck on that front, but it's comforting to know that they're preserved properly anyway.

The main reason I listened back to Jerry on Stu's show was to verify what I thought he said about the censored eleven being restored, so I'll be adding those to the list, too. I wish I could see them in their pristine state, but again it's just good to know that they've been preserved.

I saw the screen cap of "Fresh Hare" on another thread. Was it restored and remastered from the original master 35mm negatives? On Stu's Show Jerry was adamant that the only shorts which were restored were the ones that have shown up on home video since the first Golden Collection and onward.

Out of the bonus cartoons on Golden Collection Vol. 6, Rabbit Rampage, Boyhood Daze and Bartholomew versus the Wheel all look restored to me. Mouse Mazurka on the Mouse Chronicles set also looks like a remaster but is not presented in HD on the Blu-ray. The restored clips of Fresh Hare were excerpted in the new Tex Avery documentary on the second Platinum Collection, but I have not seen any evidence that any more LT/MMs have been remastered/restored. If I hazard a guess as to why this wasn't released, it's possible it might have been slated to appear on the Golden/Platinum/Super Star sets at some point but shelved for whatever reason? ("Those fraking SUITS")

There are many other restored prints done in 1997/1998 which were not released yet but are seen on TV, like Robot Rabbit, A Fractured Leghorn, Of Rice and Hen, The Unmentionables, A Mouse Divided, Stooge for a Mouse, etc. I listed all of them in an older topic.




Last, the first two Super Stars discs prints exist in 4:3, and are commonly seen on Boomerang France and Germany.

I humbly salute your research, Cool_Cat. It sort of makes sense how some cartoons had to be redone for HD if they were restored very early on and pre-dating the Golden Collection sets. Guess WHV missed the boat to release these good-looking remasters on the Golden Collections during the heyday of DVD. They would probably have to be redone "up to scratch" nowadays to meet Warner's supposed standard Jerry mentioned on one of the Stu's Show talks (unless they're dumped as an SD extra to their catalog feature film Blu-rays). Seems to be the same situation with the colour Columbia/Screen Gems cartoons that were extensively remastered for the Totally Tooned In show, judging by how they (re-)restored a few shorts for inclusion on a Three Stooges miscellany DVD a couple of years ago.

Even the extra features Mouse Mazurka, Boyhood Daze (GC6) and Rabbit Rampage, or Ant Pasted from the Porky Pig DVD.

There are many other restored prints done in 1997/1998 which were not released yet but are seen on TV, like Robot Rabbit, A Fractured Leghorn, Of Rice and Hen, The Unmentionables, A Mouse Divided, Stooge for a Mouse, etc. I listed all of them in an older topic.

I recently binged through every Jerry Beck appearance on Stu's Show and that's an enormous amount of information for my memory to accurately retain verbatim, but I remember in the more recent shows that Stu asked twice if all of the remaining LTMMs were restored yet (it was over the span of two consecutive episodes and Stu didn't remember he had just asked the same question a few months prior). Jerry answered exactly the same both times that the cartoons which didn't make it onto any of the Golden Collections, Super Stars, and Platinums were not restored.

It could be that he means the restorations which started with the first Golden Collection, which were from the original master negatives. He even mentioned that they don't even know what they're going to find until they pull a short from the vault and open the container.

Also, Stu asked if the laser discs were restored (apparently he has them all sitting right there close by and said they looked fantastic) and I seem to recall Jerry saying they were not.

Jerry also said many times that the reason Hanna-Barbera cartoons are being sold at Warner Archives and the remaining LTMMs are not is because none of those remaining LTMMs have been restored while the HBs were already restored upon acquisition, so it doesn't cost them anything to put out the HB cartoons.

But those screen grabs look great....no doubt about it! Is it possible that they weren't sourced from the original negatives in the Warner Brothers vault, but instead sourced and restored from a dupe negative or some other print?

If this isn't just a case of me misunderstanding what he said or missing something he said entirely, then it could be that, and I'm just spit-balling here, Jerry and Warner Brothers don't consider those previous restorations legitimate (even though they may look better), and so they don't acknowledge them. Sort of like the corporation doesn't consider them canon within their restoration universe. So this would have been a great question to ask Jerry last week on Stu's show, especially when you have evidence in the form of your screen caps and apparently they even used some of them for their home video product.

One thing sounds imminent and that is when the license with Cartoon Network expires then these great looking versions you've shown will probably vanish from the airwaves because Warner Brothers will probably only use the HD versions from Golden Collection 2 and up from here on out.

The good news is that after the CN license expiration they will be able to dangle the library out there for taking bids (hopefully for nonexclusive licenses so they won't be trapped with one network or streaming service). And that will contribute to restoring the rest of the library and possibly even making some corrections like the Hippety Hopper short, as well as some of the other issues in my list above (DVNR, interlacing, etc.).

Does anyone know when the Cartoon Network license expires?

I live in Europe where free TVs are MUCH better than CN which hasn't aired Looney Tunes in 5 years here.



That channel for an example started airing since 2 weeks ago Blu Ray prints in full 1080p glory. I hope this doesn't mean they won't air unrestored shorts anymore. I saw the rare short Jeepers Creepers uncut a few months ago on it.

Anyway, my point was in the first GC and other DVDs they recycled many 1998 prints, which to Jerry then would qualify as remastered, while the existing ones not on the GC would not, and that doesn't make sense.

This is the exact same print released on the first GC of Canned Feud taken from my VHS released in 1999:



These were obviously mastered in standard definition, as in the PCs they had to make new masters. The newer GC1 prints were done in HD.

But these would be enough for more DVD releases. They could make at least 4 DVDs just with them. If anyone wants, I can post screenshots of all the unreleased ones.

Jerry Beck is only a consultant for Warner Bros, and doesn't oversee the remastering process directly, so I'll cut him some slack. I don't believe he knows the complete specifics of what has been restored or not, he just stated he isn't aware of any remastered shorts that haven't made it to DVD/Blu-ray, aside from the shelved "close-to-happening" Censored 11 release that he had a close hand in.

You're right that it seems sensible to release more DVDs easily with these remasters but in these uncertain times of home video, I think Warner Bros simply aren't aware of these remasters or would likely do anything with them if they believe the market is just not there. As for why one of these remasters ended up on the Porky Super Stars DVD, it's been quite clear the Family Division's handling of that particular line has been inept, at best. A seeming attempt to cut costs by grabbing off-the-shelf masters which that particular division feels is acceptable for release.

This ties in with the argument Jerry was trying to make on Stu's Show that studios don't know what they own and don't share our "fan/collector mentality". What seems like common knowledge to us unfortunately doesn't apply to most people working in the company. Being the massive corporate behemoth that all major studios are, I doubt anyone there possesses comprehensive knowledge of what has been remastered, especially 17 years ago where there could have been a completely different team handling these transfers than there is now. Shooting Jerry Beck an e-mail with those screenshots you've posted would be your best shot at answering your queries, though I suspect he will not be able to give a definitive answer either.

Mouse Mazurka is the 1998 version only in the Region 1 release of Mouse Chronicles, on Region 2 it's unrestored.

The 1997 batch looks worse than the other ones, but for an example Beep Prepared looked better than the PC version to me.

These transfers were seen early on TV in Europe because WB redubbed in foreign languages those shorts for the specific VHS releases.
