Just went to the website of Ray Pointer's company Inkwell Images and discovered that he's just recently released a Blu-ray/DVD compilation of five Toby the Pup cartoons, including Circus Time (1931) which has never before been distributed in video form to my knowledge.

Jerry Beck has a post about it on Animation Scoop (http://www.animationscoop.com/i...-pup-on-blu-ray-and-dvd/ ), and it's available directly from Inkwell Images (http://www.inkwellimagesink.com/product/toby-the-pup/ ) and on Amazon.com (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01NAFB1JW/ ); the shipping cost ordering directly from Ray is about a buck cheaper than what Amazon shows for me.

Weirdly, the case art shown on Amazon and Inkwell Images is different to that in the photo of an actual case in Jerry's post...

(And why is it that animation historians don't seem to remember that Dick Huemer told Joe Adamson in 1968 that Toby was the creation of Sid Marcus (which the character design also looks consistent with)?)

Wait, where was that?

Here's a link to a complete transcription of Adamson's interview. The statement by Huemer is about 1/2 to 2/3 of the way into the first section (use your browser's search function for "toby" to jump there quickly). http://oralhistory.libra...tylesheet/xhtml2/tei.xsl

An edited excerpt "with additions by Huemer" published in a mid-'70s issue of Funnyworld, focusing on his work at Fleischer and Mintz, retains the same statement: http://huemer.com/animat4b.htm

Cool, thanks. I also put his new book on my Christmas list.

Thad Komorowski just posted a review of this set on his blog. Evidently it's not quite as good as one would have expected...

Sounds like Inkwell Images should consider collaborating with Thunderbean on DVD/Bluray sets like this.

On average, how long does it take for Inkwell Images discs to arrive? I ordered mine on the 11th and it still hasn't arrived. There isn't a contact form on their site either, so I can't ask. I haven't ordered discs from them for six years.

I don't think you'll be seeing them for a while, at least, because I believe the encoding issues I pointed out in my review are being corrected.

Hopefully, he's getting some outside help.

I probably shouldnt have spent over 20 bucks on 5 HD cartoons, especially after Thad's review. I am, however a collector of Toby era cartoons, I am praying that the quality is not horrible.

I also ordered on the 11th, received today. Looks like stopped taking orders on Amazon. As there isn't another disc of any kind attempting to provide this collection of (known) Toby films, I don't think this set is about maximum value proposition. It's $20+ for 6 obscure precode cartoons, for collectors and completists. Would temper expectations regardless, but on cursory review of the DVD contents, looks decent/watchable to me. The first cartoon is the roughest, and Down South looks a little washed out. None of this is material that general audiences will bother with no matter how good it is or isn't.

So this is available for purchase again... but none of the issues were corrected?
